Today’s guest picture, sent to me by Mike Tinker, shows Mr Grumpy’s statuesque oriental cousins in the Orchid Gardens in Singapore…surrounded by orchids.
I had hoped to have thrown off the irritating cold by today but the reverse was true and it threw me.
I added coughing and sneezing to my snivelling repertoire and practised hard at it all day.
As a result I never left the house, took few pictures through the windows and was of even less help to Mrs Tootlepedal than usual in the daily tasks.
I did notice the observant robin back at its post.
There are two other robins about. They may be a pair as they appeared side by side on the lawn pecking away industriously. There was some half hearted chasing by the watching robin but it seems not to be too unhappy as long as they keep away from the feeder.
I took another robin shot later in the day and can’t make up my kind whether it is the sentry or one from the lawn chancing its arm but I think it is the sentry.
Talking of half hearted chasing, Mrs Tootlepedal went out to chase off an unwanted cat which was creeping about in the flower beds stalking birds and was last seen giving it a stroke as it stretched its back against her boots.
Birds were scarce once again (perhaps not entirely coincidentally) although a few goldfinches flew in….
…often to a hot reception.
Apart from the annoying coughing and spluttering, the crumpets were also a low spot.
In spite of their good looks, the taste test was a disaster and they weren’t very eatable at all. Either they weren’t cooked at a high enough temperature or the batter wasn’t the right consistency but they were very hard going.
I’ll have one more go and then give up.
Mike Tinker dropped in with some therapeutic cough sweeties and I although I sucked on a couple, I can’t say that they were a miracle cure. For cough sweeties, they tasted very nice though so I didn’t complain.
It has been a pity to waste some very calm, dry days when I could have been out on the bike but there is no arguing with a cold. I was guessing that as the cold in my chest goes, the cold outside will return and icy roads will make cycling impossible but a look at the long range forecast gives me hope that I might get another pedal or two in before the end of the year.
A chaffinch, slightly out of focus because it was heading for the perch at the back of the feeder, not the one that I was pointing at, is the flying bird of the day.
