Today’s guest picture is the first ever from Irving, a Langholm exile to whom I spoke at the Common Riding. He has just got round to feeding my love of bridges with this shot from the Brecon canal a year or two ago.
We are two days off the Winter Solstice and we had a very grey day to remind us of the fact today. It was dry and calm again so it could have been worse and we are promised a lot worse as the week goes on and in retrospect, it might come to look better than it felt today.
It was really too dark to take worthwhile pictures early on so I was happy to be able to entertain Dropscone for coffee while Mrs Tootlepedal led a varied life in other parts of the town.
After Dropscone had left and before Mrs Tootlepedal returned, I got on my cycling gear and went out for a spin on the fairly speedy bike. I was keen not to give my chest any reason to grumble so I adopted a conservative pace and trundled round the twenty mile run down to Canonbie and back. I only stopped for one picture on the way.
The sight of the Archimedes screw patiently and endlessly making electricity always gives me pleasure.
When I got home, I had a look to see if there were any birds about.
Just to show how lucky I was to catch a wren standing still yesterday, this was the best that I could do today.
Still I was pleased to see the wren still around. I may get a better chance later on.
After a shower, Mrs Tootlepedal and I packed up a parcel of Christmas gifts which I took up to the post office on my slow bike and then, having bought some more small presents while I was up there, I took them home and we packed them up too. Then I walked back up to the town to post them too.
When I got home, my system temporarily shut down after this unusual amount of exercise and I had to spend quite a bit of time sitting down. I have nearly perfected my theatrical groaning now.
All was well an hour or so later though thanks to the quiet sit, a nourishing meal and a small glass of good port. Poor Sandy is still suffering badly from his cold so I feel quite fortunate.
Still there was no chance to take a leaf or flower of the day today and the flying bird of the day is a shambles.
Roll on the longer days!
